This week we had a total eclipse of the sun that was visible across the continental U.S. For fun, some friends and I were were making an “eclipse playlist” with songs that mention eclipses, the sun/moon, celestial events, etc. This song from “Little Shop of Horrors” made the list. Beware of the strange plants that appeared during the solar eclipse!

“An der schöenen blauen Donau,” or “The Beautiful Blue Danube,” is one of the most famous waltzes by Johann Strauss, Jr. This waltz is synonymous with the city of Vienna, whose heart, it has been said, beats in 3/4 time. Every New Year at midnight, orchestras play this piece for the crowds celebrating in front of the city hall and elsewhere in the city.
Although not on New Years, this video shows dancers and an orchestra in front of the Austrian imperial summer residence, Schönbrunn palace. Look for the man with the red-white-red sash dancing with the woman in white with star-shaped hair clips at 4:48. They are portraying Emperor Franz Josef I and his wife, the Empress Elisabeth (Sissi), who reigned in the second half of the 19th century.
Today I’d like to share the “Prelude in E Minor, Op. 28, No. 4” by Frederic Chopin. This is one of Chopin’s most popular and accessible preludes. It is very emotional and paints a vivid picture. To me, it describes sadness or melancholy while looking through a window at a steady rain. For Cortot, the performer in this video, it was the feeling one has “above a grave.” What does it mean to you? I hope you enjoy Cortot’s recording from 1933.
This is one of the most famous pieces from the classical music genre. “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,” or, “A Little Night Music”, is a light and happy piece by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It has four movements and is written for a chamber string ensemble. Here is the first movement, marked “Allegro.” Enjoy!
